What Should I Do With This Look?
For this look, you need a good comb and your favorite rubber hair bands. I prefer to use a small hairband so it’s easy to hide and doesn’t add unnecessary bulk. You can also add a ribbon, a decorative comb, clip, or something else if you like.
Of course, below are some other items I keep in my hair care kit that you may be interested in adding to your routine. It works with basic styles and is great for braids and other styles like this.

How to Make a Braided Ponytail
This hairstyle looks great on freshly washed hair or unwashed hair. Before starting, I recommend making sure you don’t have tangles and combing your hair. If you have a lot of flyaways or frizz, you can also cover your hair with a little mousse or argan oil to smooth it out. Use a hair tie when you’re ready for it, and be prepared to handle several pieces of hair at once as you braid and weave.
Step 1
Start by sectioning the hair so that there are 5 sections of hair. One on each side, then the rest of the hair that falls on your back will be three sections.
Now, take the piece on the left from the front, and over the first section, under the second, then over the last section.
Step 2
Now twist it over that last piece to the right, but split that last piece and hold the one you just weaved and the outer piece.
Now, take the second piece on the right, and weave it back and under the other pieces as you did, but going in the opposite direction.
Step 3
Continue this process, over and over 3 to 4 times, until the pieces are almost gone and you’re happy with the look.
You will work with 4 to 5 pieces of hair at a time while weaving back and forth, over and under to create a basket weave look with your hair.
Step 4
Now, gather all but one of the ends together, and tie it with a rubber band, leaving the last piece of hair.
Once it’s tied in place, wrap that loose end of hair around the ponytail holder to cover it. If necessary, a bobby pin can hold it in place, but it’s usually best to tuck the end back into the rubber on the back side.
Then tuck the loose end under and into the band to secure it.
What Can I Do to Make This Style More Unique?
This look is super easy and simple, but you can add a little something extra to the look to give it an update. It can be casual or even a little more fancy with just a few additions. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make a simple change and see your hair look completely different. These ideas can take it from an everyday look to an elegant style perfect for any event. Below are some ideas that I think would work well with this low ponytail ideal for long hair.
- Weave a strip of ribbon, lace, or beaded ribbon through the weaves of this ponytail for extra sparkle or color.
- Place a decorative comb or barrette over the braid or at the base of the ponytail.
- Continue braiding the ponytail until the end.
- Then braid the ends of the tail under the braided section to create a unique bun.
- Start the braid higher at the crown of the head and make a tight weave against the head for a different look. It’s great when layered underneath for an updo.
- Use gel or mousse to create a middle part before braiding for another sleek look.
