Emmy-winning Chernobyl director Johan Renck took on Instagram to confirm that upcoming HBO Max production Dune prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood has officially begun. The Swedish filmmaker, who also serves as an executive producer, is expected to direct the first two episodes of the highly anticipated project.

Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: The Sisterhood follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they battle the forces that threaten the future of humanity, and found the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit. Emily Watson will play Valya Harkonnen, while Shirley Henderson portrays Tula Harkonnen. They include Indira Varma, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, and Travis Fimmel.
The project originates from Legendary Television. It was created, written, and executive produced by Diane Ademu-John, who also serves as co-showrunner with Alison Schapker. Executive producers are Schapker, Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, and Cait Collins, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert for the Frank Herbert estate.

Dune: The Sisterhood set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s epic Dune novel series and takes place 10,000 years before the events of the original Dune book. The series is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Armed with unique abilities, this group of women weaves the feudal politics of Dunecontinue their own plans that will eventually lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, and the events of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies.
