Slipknot’s Corey Taylor Talks to Elementary Schools About His Band’s Music: Listen

Slipknot Frontperson Corey Taylor was interviewed by primary school children during his guest slot on Craig Charles’ BBC radio show yesterday. The idea came to fruition after a teacher in North Dakota used band music to teach fifth-graders about time signatures. Five children in the class read questions for Taylor to answer. Listen to BBC Voices from 1:15:50.

Asked if Slipknot has any songs that change the time signature, he replied, “We do actually. ‘Vermilion’ is actually a song that goes from three-four to four-four and kind of goes back and forth. I think there’s a section there that goes from three-four to seven-eight, actually, that’s really amazing. And these are all kinds of relationships with a riff that can go either way. And it allows us to kind of flow back and forth between them.

Another child asked how he became a musician and a songwriter. “You know, it’s just something I’m naturally good at,” Taylor replied. “Everyone started singing when I was about 10 years old. And I realized that I could pick up a guitar and I could find the notes that were being played in the song that I was listening to, which, I then realized that I have what is called pitch. It’s not a perfect pitch, but it’s pretty close. And, after that, I realized that people liked what I was doing and just trusted it. I taught myself how to play guitar, so I could write songs. I used to write poems and stuff, and I taught myself how to write lyrics. And then it’s just a matter of getting people together to jam and have fun and dance. The rest is history. But it all comes from my love to sing, and love to sing the things I love.”

On what inspired him, he added, “Oh, man, everything really! I mean, life in general is the biggest influence you can have. There are many things that you can look around, whether the things that happen in your life, the things that happen in other people’s lives, the things that affect the culture, the things that affect us in political, geopolitical, sociopolitical. […] There are many things that, if you look around with the right kind of eyes, you will find inspiration, whatever it may be. And you can take anything and write a song about it. The great thing about music is that it is limitless. It is endless. All it needs is a beginning.”

Slipknot’s new album, The End, Until nowcame out today (September 30).
