Smiths Drummer Mike Joyce Remembers Andy Rourke in New Interview: Watch

After paying tribute to bass player Andy Rourke on social media last week, the Smiths drummer Mike Joyce remembered his late friend and bandmate in a new interview with BBC Breakfast. Joyce sat down with journalist Colin Paterson to discuss his memories of playing with Rourke in the Smiths, as well as their friendship outside the band. “I don’t think Andy realizes what a great bass player he is,” Joyce said of Rourke during the conversation. “I don’t think Andy really accepted how important his contribution to music was. I don’t think he understood that and realized that.” Watch the full interview below.

Johnny Mar Rourke’s death was confirmed in a statement posted on social media Friday (May 19). Rourke is 59, and living with pancreatic cancer. “I know Andy is very ill,” Joyce told Paterson on BBC Breakfast. “I felt like we weren’t going to have to wait long for that call, and when I got it, it didn’t make it any easier.”

Joyce last saw Rourke on a trip to New York City in February, where the two musicians recalled some of Rourke’s signature bass lines for the Smiths. “He’s a self-effacing character,” Joyce said. “He never saw himself as a great bass player because it was easy for him and easy for him. He just put on the bass and the magic happens.” “I feel like he always brings me,” added Joyce. “Any drummer sounds good with Andy playing bass.”

After the news of Rourke’s death, Morrissey wrote a eulogy for his former bandmate, wrote: “He will never die as long as his music is heard. He never knew his own power, and nothing he played was played by another man.”
