As the National Women’s Soccer League game continued, teams competing all day stopped their games to show unity.
On Wednesday, October 6, the professional soccer league returned to action for the first time from continuing the hiatus last week following the player’s allegation against the sacked North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley. The three games that took place on Oct. 6 all stopped at the six-minute mark as players from both teams linked arms in the center circle.
The National Women’s Soccer League players Association, which represents league players, said a statement posted on social media on Oct. 6 that the move was a show of support Sinead Farrelly and Maya Shim. In an investigative report published by The Athletic on Thursday, Sept. 30, both women accused Riley of alleged abusive behavior.
“Teams will stop playing every game tonight at the 6th minute,” the union message read. “Players will unite in a center circle for a minute in recognition of the 6 years that have been made for Mana, Sinead and everyone who has fought so long to be heard.” The union, too detailed a list of requirements for the league regarding violent behavior investigations.
