Our recurring new music series Origins where artists can reveal the stories behind their latest release. Today, Mom + Pop artist Alice Merton shared “Loveback.”
Alice Merton is now sharing the latest preview of her upcoming album SIDE with the single “Loveback.”
“Loveback” serves as the singer-songwriter’s sophomore’s full-length opening salvo. It sets the stage for a strong indie pop sound, one full of fun, shout-out chorus, but also highlights the album’s extensive self-recovery themes.
“‘ Loveback ’is about waking up one day and finding out that someone has stolen a part of you that you want back,” Merton explains. “It’s the realization that I don’t‘ need ’anyone to exist. I never trusted anyone or anything, even if I felt it sometimes. It’s like I’m giving away something I rarely get back. At some point I felt like I had forgotten why I was doing what I was doing, and I felt like I had lost sight of what was really important to me.
Merton wrote and performed the song with Tim Uhlenbrock, with Grammy nominee Matty Green (Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran) handling the mixing duties. Listen to “Loveback” via its lyric video below, followed by Alice Merton’s exclusive Origins of the single.
Follow-up in 2019 Mint, SIDES arrives June 17 via Mama + Pop. Ahead of the album’s drop date, Merton will spend May opening for Bastille across the US, with an EU/UK headlining trek scheduled for fall. Get tickets to all his upcoming gigs HERE.
