Sundance 2023: Justice | Festivals and Awards

As with previous projects, this entertaining documentary is about listening to abuse survivors share their experiences in detail (verified by Herdy and his team) and letting their courage speak for themselves. self We see this happening in real time with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in 2018, when she spoke in front of millions of Americans and a special committee about Kavanaugh’s sexual assault at a party when they were in high school. Given by Dr. Ford was mostly himself that time, and he only appeared briefly at the beginning of the cut that was screened last night. His face is turned away from the camera. He asked Liman why he did this project, and he responded with something that anyone who felt him during those testimonies can say: We all look at his courage to speak publicly about his trauma. . Then we saw her story being silenced. “Justice” picks up where it lost its courage, and it serves many purposes to fill in more of the past and reveal that there is more to the bigger picture.

One of the worst things that has happened in this whole ordeal is that we have more or less forgotten about it – crushed by the cynicism of no justice, in fact – but Liman’s film takes us back to that time. In his opening act, we get a behind-the-scenes look at Dr. Ford decided to speak. When you see these events in such a sharp, chronological way, the dark irony becomes even more apparent: Dr. Ford speaks with great clarity as he sacrifices his public life to share what he will never forget.

“Justice” also shines a big spotlight on the little-publicized story of Debby Ramirez, who shared testimonials of her abuse allegations against Kavanaugh and his friends at a party in Yale. And in doing so, we get a deeper look at the close friend group from the ’80s texting each other in the 2018 news cycle. Others try to protect their friend Brett, or themselves, while everyone traces what happened in their high school days or at Yale while hanging out with Kavanaugh. Mutual friends of Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford talks to the camera and illustrates how the entire web of people who remember the period under review, including the behavior that Kavanaugh denies.
