Super Mario Bros Movie Directors Defend Chris Pratt’s Mario Voice


Although there have been some outcries about the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario The Super Mario Bros. Moviefilm directors are firm in their belief that the Guardians of the Galaxy the star is a good fit.

While talking to Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar), Aaron Horvath explains the choice.

“For us, it makes perfect sense,” Horvath said, referring to himself and fellow co-director Michael Jelenic. “He’s so good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way Mario was portrayed in our film, he was perfect for it.

This is consistent with how Horvath described Mario’s character earlier in the interview. “If you play, if you don’t quit, Mario will be successful,” Horvath said. “So we moved the player’s experience from the game to a character in that [movie] Mario could have done it.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie directed by Horvath and Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) from a scenario written by Minions: The Rise of Gru scribe Matthew Fogel. It was created by Chris Meledandri for Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo.

The film features the voices of its all-star cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong , Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
