The Roots‘ Black Mind will star in the upcoming Broadway musical with the title Black Gone, The New York Times reports. The rapper, who took the lead role, also made music and wrote lyrics for the production. The script for Black Gone written by 12 Years a Slave screen writer John Ridley. This will mark the theatrical debut of Black Thought.
Adapted by Ridley Black Gone from George S. Schuyler’s 1931 novel of the same name. The story centers on a method that transforms Black skin into white, bred by the main character Dr. Junius Crookman (Black Mind). Musical to be directed by Scott Elliott and with choreography from Bill T. Jones, with musical direction, orchestral, and vocal arrangement by Daryl Waters.
The game was originally scheduled to air in October 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will run today from January 11 to February 27, 2022 at the Pershing Square Signature Center. Opening night falls on Feb. 8.
