The Clueless Director remembers Brittany Murphy’s First Impressions

When Brittany Murphy auditioned for Tai’s part Clueless, he immediately stood out from the crowd.

“We’ve seen a lot of people on the Tai side, and I feel like everyone is kind of acting on it as opposed to just feeling it. And when Brittany comes in, she’s just real,” the film’s writer and director, said. Amy Heckerling, recalled in the new HBO documentary Max What Happened, Brittany Murphy?. “She felt like I was a sweet girl who was a class that didn’t fit in with others and was just trying and being good but, like, lost in the world and that’s exactly what I was looking for.”

Still, Murphy got the gig. The 1995 film was a huge success and became a role breakout for the star. Murphy has continued to act in several other films, including Girl, disabled, 8 Mile, packing married and Uptown Woman. He also worked for a TV show King of the Hill.
