God of War begins by having players make a personal quest to place the ashes of Kratos ’lover and Atreus’ mother on top of the highest mountain. Before they can begin this dangerous journey, they are interrupted by “The Stranger” which promotes a fight with Kratos. The Stranger seems invincible, feels no pain, and is a Norse god. He is the main antagonist of the races that follow Kratos throughout the game – he is actually Baldur, the son of Odin in Norse mythology.

So, who is the mysterious, friendly sorcerer who knows better than he announces but who helped Kratos and Atreus? she Freya, another God of War antagonist and key figures in Norse mythology. Freya is actually also a god, formerly the leader of Vanir. Kratos and Atreus bring Mimir’s head to Freya to be resurrected (Mimir asks Kratos to kill him and does so because he was imprisoned and tortured by Odin).

The Death of Baldur & Freya’s Curse In God Of War (2018)

Freya is Odin’s wife and Baldur’s mother, and like Norse lore, she uses magic to protect her son Baldur against anything from Earth except a basic, unexpected thing: mistletoe . This is why Baldur seeks Kratos, in search of pain and death, and he believes thanks to Odin. Freya notices the special mistletoe arrow gift to Atreus from Sindri (God of Warthe dwarf merchant’s) during the sequence of Mimir’s resurrection and was immediately alarmed and shocked, asking Atreus to burn anything like this if Atreus could still see. This is because these arrows can kill Baldur.

Freya may have fired Atreus’ arrows but there was still mistletoe in Atreus’s bow that Baldur had found when Atreus was punched. Later in this final God of War away boss with Baldur, Kratos beats him but Atreus convinces Kratos to release him. Baldur then confronts his mother, Freya, beating him for interfering with his life and cursing him. She tells him she won’t forgive him and she seems willing to die to make it right. Baldur attacks, stabs Freya, and Kratos to end the “cycle” declaring that he “should be better“and slapped Baldur’s neck, thinking he had done the right thing.

However, Freya wants to die and vows to take revenge against Kratos. There was a reason he cursed Baldur to eternal life and why he was willing to die. This is where Kratos breaks down his true backstory (summarized in original God of War game trilogy) to his son – he was from Sparta, he turned his soul into a god and killed many, including his father. Atreus wonders if these are all the gods good for (killing the family) but Kratos promises they can be better. However, Kratos doesn’t know the bigger picture and Baldur’s death brings Ragnarok up as quickly as possible, as Mimir and with some other hints suggested earlier in the game. Baldur’s death elevates Ragnarok to 100 winters, though the time in these areas may be a little abstract.

Loki’s Frost Giant Prophecy Revealed At The End Of God Of War

With Baldur’s death, and Freya’s disappearance, Kratos and Atreus head to the top of the snowy mountain in Jotunheim to complete their quest as Faye’s last wish. When they reached the structure at its peak a mural on the wall was revealed depicting Mother of Atreus with Leviathan Ax talking to giants. Art describes its story God of War game, from Kratos and Atreus first meet the world snake and the mountain dragon to the stone mason and the recently concluded war against Baldur. This is the story of Atreus prophesied by the giants. Kratos isn’t the only parent who keeps secrets as it turns out. Atreus ’mother was a giant, so Atreus was a part-giant.

Faye sends them on this mountain search, knowing they will find it, knowing how this journey will be. That was Loki’s prediction. Atreus and Loki, the original name Faye for Atreus, as revealed by Kratos. Kratos also notices an extra piece of wall art that Atreus missed before they spread Faye’s ashes in the valley of the dead giants and it depicts a dead Kratos in the arms as possible ‘ g a larger, older Atreus. There was something, like a spirit, that joined their mouths like a serpent in the air. Did Loki resurrect Kratos or did Kratos’ spirit transfer to Atreus/Loki? Or is it something that completely attacks them both? This is something that will definitely be played in the next game, God of War Ragnarok.

How God Ends War Puts God In War: Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok there is much to build from. Odin is the big bad of this game to say the least. He hasn’t seen it yet but his family and minions will have to fight the players. And it includes God of WarThor’s version, which shows the end of the game as a teaser for the sequel after the return of Kratos and Atreus. The players have already defeated his brother Baldur and Thor’s sons Magni and Modi, so he won’t be happy. Early taunts for Ragnarok also strongly suggested that Thor could be a major villain in the sequel.

That tease and mural at the end of God of War already waiting for what will come next in succession because this prophecy of Ragnarok has already begun. This great battle also includes the deaths of Odin and Thor – among other Norse figures – but also Loki in mythology. Since Atreus is Loki and is now known as Kratos ’son, it will be interesting to see how these events unfold. Of course God of War not strictly following Norse myth and taking some liberties, but it remains to be seen how close God of War Ragnarok stuck to its source material.

The prophecy foretold at Jutunheim is revealed in God of WarThe end is all fulfilled, so players should expect Ragnarok to happen – unless Kratos (and players) can make their own destiny. It makes one wonder how different the game is if Cut from Atreus God of War, a development decision that is about to become a reality. However, the end of God of War there should be a lot of players excited for the upcoming sequel.
