The Fury of Becky Cast & Directors Talk SXSW Premiere

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese talks to Becky’s Anger stars Lulu Wilson and Seann William Scott and directors Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote about the sequel, which is set to have its world premiere at SXSW on March 11.

“Two years after she survived a brutal attack on her family, Becky tries to rebuild her life in the care of an elderly woman – a kindred spirit named Elena, ” reads the film’s synopsis. But when a group known as the ‘Noble Men’ break into their home, attack them, and take her beloved dog, Diego, Becky must return to her old ways to protect herself and the his loved ones.

Tyler Treese: Sean, a lot of your previous antagonist roles are still likable and on the fun side and there’s an inherent comedy in this movie, but you’re this extremist leader, you’re this evil villain with no real redemption. . attributes. Is this an interesting change of pace for you? I’ve never seen you on paper like this before.

Old William Scott: Yes. Yes, I mean it. I love it. For most part of my career, I have played variations of the same character and that in broad comedies. So the opportunity to play this kind of role in this movie was really, really fun. The whole experience, honestly, the way it happened — that Matt and Suzanne interested me in the part, and I read the script and I loved it. I had some thoughts about some ideas for the character and we were on the phone and started talking about it, and they actually responded to it and then kind of evolved.

I think it was like two weeks ago that I was on set, but they took the ideas and they added some scenes, and rewrote things. It was an absolutely amazing experience and completely different from anything I had experienced before. Then on set, just really trying to live it up and trying to keep it going. And I love it. I’m really enjoying it — especially because I’ve never done anything like this, you know, in my career.

Lulu, we’ve seen how Becky has changed since the first film. We went on for a few years and he was a runaway. He trains and stays fit. What do you like most about this evolution of Becky that we will see throughout the second movie?

Lulu Wilson: You know, it was really important to me that we saw what he went through in those two years that we weren’t with him, between the first and second movies. I wanted it to be very clear what he went through and how he was cared for just as much, if not more.

I want to make it clear that he will never let his guard down and he is still training … he is still ready. But he takes away the teenage angst that was a big deal in the first movie. He’s more mature, he’s grown up, he’s independent, [and] he is just ready to live. He was ready for what happened next.

Matt and Suzanne, I’m curious, what does it mean for both of you that it premiered at SXSW? It is a great festival with a great history in it. What does that mean for both of you?

Suzanne Coote: Like, everything.

Matt Angel: More than I can put into words, actually. I don’t think it’s ever hit me. We’re leaving tomorrow for Austin and I’m not here. It probably won’t hit me until we get home next week and I’m like, “Wait, did that happen?”

Suzanne Coote: He was very angry last night, and I said, “What happened?” And he said, “I think I’m nervous.” It means … we’ve never had a film at a festival and for it to be like SXSW … it’s a huge honor. Great honor.

Matt Angel: We also wanted to do a crowd-pleaser, and it felt like it resonated.

Old William Scott: I think what’s really cool about this movie, and Matt, you could say this, is how it all comes together. Wasn’t it, for you, very easy to be together from the time you were approached when the shooting of the movie ended?

Matt Angel: I will never forget. That’s how we just found out that Suzanne is pregnant. On December 16, BoulderLight Pictures called us and we have been trying to work with them for years and find the right project. And JD Lifshitz said, “You’re not interested in making a sequel to the movie, Becky, from like 2020, you want?” And we were like, “Yeah, we’d dig into doing something fun like that. We have a lot of ideas for what we want to do.” And he was like, “Cool, we don’t have a script and we need it.” in three weeks.” And he said, “No.”

Suzanne Coote: Not like, like, “Have fun writing. I’m going to lie flat.”

Matt Angel: Yes. So I put myself in a room and wrote it for three weeks.

Suzanne Coote: To Seann’s point, then we started shooting.

Matt Angel: Yes, Seann got the call and was set two weeks later. It definitely happened very quickly, but it felt organic. It always feels organic.
