Within two years, I was twice robbed in Baltimore City. I was always dealing with stress, making poor food choices, and I wasn’t always at home. Here, I was able to cut through a lot of distractions. I laser-focus when I work, but when work is done I enjoy time with family and friends. I was not caught up in the news cycle; I’m not very much on social media. I miss 98% of professional and college sports, but I’m good at that. present ko diri.
Another shoe to drop is that I don’t usually encounter discrimination or racism in my day-to-day interactions. It’s a free feeling. I am not part of a majority culture but I feel that I am valued not only by my cultural community but by all the people in this unique place. Most of the ex-pats I’ve been in a relationship with, I see I am. Of course, there are times when tourists carry negative energy and some ex-pats keep it up but here I have chosen to surround myself and our family with reciprocal positive energy.
We recently promised to stay a year in Costa Rica. My spouse and I both work remotely with real estate investments, once to twice a quarter we have to travel back to the US, but more than that, we are here or traveling somewhere in Central America. We’ve recently started talking about East Africa again, so that kids can learn French and be in a place where they are the majority. For now, we’re not sure. Vigilance.
