The State of the Oscar Race: A Crazy Week Offers Clarification on Key Categories | Festivals and Awards

Alas, two actors whose work was nominated this year were not there on Tuesday. Brendan Fraserwho became the Best Actor in a Drama for his movie “The Whale,” walked away from the awards show. The reason? In 2018, Fraser alleged sexual assault by Phillip Berk, former president of the HFPA who is from South Africa. Berk was fired in 2021 for calling Black Lives Matter “a racist hate movement.”

Then there is Tom Cruisewhose movie “Top Gun: Maverick” nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Cruise was probably up for Best Actor, and could have been there for the Academy, but he returned his three Golden Globes trophies in protest because of the controversies. The voting members decided to go the smaller route and he was overlooked.

In terms of timing, it is worth noting that the winners of the Golden Globes were revealed on the same day that members of the Academy Award began voting on their nominations for the 95th annual awards. The slate of Oscar contenders will be unveiled on January 24, with the Oscars show scheduled for March 12.

Actors Have Something To Say

The morning after the Globes, the Screen Actors Guild (aka SAG) revealed their picks for the best of 2022. There were some big surprises outside of Adam Sandler complicating the unpredictable fifth place for Best Actor , Ana de Armas continues his ascension at awards season for “Blonde,” and Paul Dano got in while Michelle Williams was absent (possibly due to confusion in the category since she was forced into the lead but many considered supporting the show). Once again, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans” are the strongest contenders for Oscar today as their casts account for 9 of the 20 acting nominations.
