When did fandom become too much? That is the question at the center of proliferation, the new Prime Video series about a young fan whose love for a global superstar leads to a murder. Created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, proliferation started with broken Dre (Dominique Fishback) get tickets to see his favorite artist Ni’Jah perform on his upcoming tour — at the end of the limited series, an impressive body count piled up as Dre got revenge against anyone who punched said Ni’Jah on social media.
Fishback spoke RESULTS that his casting is funny, “because I didn’t know I was a super fan except when I was a kid, when I loved Aaliyah and Michael Jackson. And still, even then I don’t have the capacity, for some reason, to think that I will actually see Michael in concert. I never asked my mom for concert tickets to see the people I love. I have B2K on my wall, like any other teenager. But otherwise, I never had that experience. “
While there are many adults involved in extreme fandom, Fishback says that “for Dre, even though he’s an adult, I think he’s still young, and that’s why his obsession is way it can be.”
Nabers, a playwright who previously worked on movies including Dietland, Guardiansand Atlantasays that the idea for proliferation happened while he was working Atlanta Season 4. “Donald called me and said, ‘Hey, I have this crazy idea about a Black female fan who’s obsessed with a popstar,'” she said. “We sat with each other for six months and really nurtured this story for two and a half years of this woman’s life, giving the pilot her origin story, the beginning of her journey. By the end of the pilot, he has changed, he is now on a journey. This is our story. You are very, very complete, beginning, middle, and end.”
The story of proliferation took its inspiration from real-life events, including the reported death by suicide of a Beyonce fan (which is denied). “We are very happy that we know the story in a real way, in terms of these two and a half years of the woman’s life. A lot of research has gone into this. We are really proud. We are very excited for of people to watch the episodes and Google and see the truth behind it,” Nabers said.
However, there was no first true story used as inspiration. Instead, Nabers said, “The idea was, ‘Oh, let’s talk about fandom. And let’s find facts that kind of support our theory — is this a story to tell for TV?’ And we did. And that was that.”
