The Wolf Among Us 2 Delayed to 2023, Telltale Issues Statement

The Wolf Among Us 2 is one of two Telltale Games titles announced by the renewed developer for 2023. However, the long-awaited follow-up adventure of Bigby will not arrive in time for this year.

Counting speech tweeted about the delay and also talks in more detail to IGN. The tweet mentions the general reason for pushing a game – it takes more time – and the team wants it to be the “sequel fans deserve.”

Telltale gave more nuanced answers to IGN, as it noted that this push is to avoid crunch and burnout. CEO Jamie Ottilie said that setting up a studio in the middle of a pandemic was difficult, and because the team did not use elements from the previous version of The Wolf Among Us 2IT must start anew. After being canceled when Telltale died in 2018, the game was announced again at The Game Awards in 2019. However, it was revealed earlier to get funding. Ottilie stated that she might not make the same decisions later.

Progress has been good since, according to Ottilie. The studio even ported the game to Unreal Engine 5, although this meant having to change some of the work already done in Unreal Engine 4.

So while the game was originally set for 2023, Ottilie said that date will only be hit if the studio releases an urgent game or crunched it.

“If we stop this game and it’s not ready, we’re going to get ripped off,” he said. “The expectations are very high, and we want the season to meet that and we want to be proud of it and know that, ‘Hey, this is the best game we can do.’ Tell the world what they want [once] it’s over, but at least we know that in these times, in these conditions, this is the best game we can do.

Crunching is a particularly sore spot for Telltale, says the developer’s first version noted with squeezing its workers far from their breaking points, which ultimately led to its demise. Neglecting the crunch follows something Ottilie said in 2019 when he noted that the team “took a scaled and methodical approach to growth” to build a healthier culture from the ground up.

The Wolf Among Usbased on DC Comics’ Stories series, originally started in October 2013 and ended in July 2014 with its fifth and final episode. It was one of Telltale’s most beloved games and ended on a cliffhanger, one that would take the studio about a decade to follow.
