In the series, Adams stars as Max, a Black woman who feels trapped and trapped in her hometown of Rockford, Illinois. Jacobson stars as Carson, an Iowa wife torn between tradition and the future.
The first two episodes of “A League of Their Own“debuted at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), which runs from June 15 to June 19, 2022.
RogerEbert.com attended for an interview with Adams and Graham about their shocking new series and why it is so much more than film.
Will, why do you feel responsible for raising the voices of women and people of color when it comes to bringing this project to life?
WILL GRAHAM: I’m a funny person. I know what it feels like to be the only one in the room. I grew up in [“A League Of Their Own” (1992)], and I love it. There’s something about this movie that says, “It’s OK to be on the field, even if you don’t feel like you should be on the field.” It’s a show about teams, which can mean a lot of different things in life. I knew from the beginning that this show could only be written and executed by a team. That’s the way to get the best version of this show. Usually on TV, the showrunner is like the voice of the author, and that’s not true for me. There is more than one writer here. There’s more than one way to look at these characters in these stories, and we want to make room for that. We try to create a culture based on openness and feedback. I think it’s from the spirit of the show, which is part of the joy of doing something you love and part of the teams.
Chanté, what was it about this story that made you decide it was the right show for you to enter the world of television?
CHANTÉ ADAMS: I love being a part of things I’ve never seen before, and I haven’t seen a story about a Black woman in sports this season, so that’s something I want to do. My career has always been about telling the stories of complex and intricate Black women. That’s Max Chapman.
Maxine is a mix of many real life women. Can you talk about women based on your character?
