Twitter cuts workers responding to hate speech and trust and safety

Twitter Inc., under new owner Elon Musk, made deeper cuts to an already depleted trust and safety team that oversees global content moderation, as well as a unit related to hate speech and harassment, according to people familiar with the matter.

At least a dozen additional cuts as of Friday night affected workers in the company’s Dublin and Singapore offices, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the changes were not public. They include Nur Azhar Bin Ayob, the head of site integrity for Twitter’s Asia-Pacific region, a recent hire; and Analuisa Dominguez, Twitter’s senior director of revenue policy.

Workers were also eliminated from the teams in charge of the misinformation policy of the social network, global appeal and state media of the platform.

Ella Irwin, the head of trust and safety at Twitter, confirmed that several members of the teams were cut but denied that they targeted some of the areas discussed by Bloomberg.

“It’s better to consolidate teams under one leader (instead of two) for example,” Irwin said in an emailed response to a request for comment.

He said Twitter is eliminating roles in areas of the company that don’t have enough “volume” to justify continued support. But he said that Twitter has increased the staff of its appeals department, and that it will continue to have a head of revenue policy and a head for the Asia-Pacific region of the platform for trust and safety.

Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, a deal that was partially financed $13 billion in debt which includes interest payments about $1.5 billion per year. Since then he has embarked on a fierce mission to transform the social-media platform, which he says is at risk of bankruptcy and losing $4 million in one day in early November.

Speaking to a Twitter Spaces event last monththe enterprising entrepreneur likened the company to an “airplane heading toward the ground at high speed with the engines on fire and the controls not working.”

Since taking over the company, Musk directs the firing or laying off nearly 5,000 of Twitter’s 7,500 employees and creating a “hardcore” work environment for those who remain.

Twitter faces multiple lawsuits over unpaid bills, including private chartered plane flights, software services and rent for one of its offices in San Francisco.
