What Are the Space Whales Grogu Saw?


In the middle The Mandalorian In the Season 3 premiere, fans saw Grogu witness several large whale-like shadows maneuvering through hyperspace as he and Mando made their way to Navarro. These “space whales” play a big part in the overall story of Star Wars and will be important in the future Ahsoka consecutively.

What are Star Wars Space Whales?

Known as Purrgil, these creatures live in deep space and can naturally fly in hyperspace. They often approach ships in hyperspace, leading to collisions and accidents, although Force-sensitive people are able to connect with the Purrgil and communicate with them somewhat. They are usually the size of a small starship and they live and travel in swarms.

How Are They Related to Ahsoka?

Purrgil has already played an important role in the end of Star Wars Rebelswhich already set the concept of the future Ahsoka spin-off series.

At the end of Star Wars Rebels, the young Jedi Ezra Bridger used several Purrgil to get the Chimaera — Grand Admiral Thrawn’s flagship — into hyperspace and away from Lothal, where it was caught in a battle with rebel forces. Ezra was on the ship with Thrawn, meaning he and Thrawn were both transported to hyperspace to the creatures unknown destination.

The end of Rebels also seen by Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren — a Mandalorian warrior and friend/ally of Ezra — looking for the young Jedi. In his next appearance at The Mandalorian Season 2, Ahsoka confronts Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth and asks her where Elsbeth’s master, Grand Admiral Thrawn, is.

It’s clear that Ahsoka and Sabine are still looking for Ezra and Thrawn and this is going to be a big part of Ahsoka series — especially since Ezra and Sabine have both been featured in the show. Perhaps Ahsoka should make a similar connection with Purrgil to learn more about the Unknown Regions the duo may be stuck in, or The Mandalorian Season 3 may be coming out to remind viewers of Purrgil before the show.
