Warning! SPOILERS for The 355
The 355 takes from a legendary female spy from the American Revolution known as Agent 355, but what does her story have to do with the film? Directed by X-Menby Simon Kinberg, The 355 debuted in theaters and followed the mission of American CIA officer Mace Brown. His mandate includes acquiring a microchip capable of arming any type of technology, from missile silos to cell phones. With the chip on the black market and buyers waiting to get their hands on it, the race continues to get it back from former DNI agent in Colombia Luis Rojas (Édgar Ramirez) before it’s all too late.
Mace’s mission also sees his team team up with a group of other female spies, including Khadijah (Lupita N’yogo), Marie Schmidt (Diane Kruger), and Graciela (Penelope Cruz). Chinese agent Lin Mi Sheng (Fan Bing-bing) also joins the group, while Mace’s fellow agent Nick Fowler (Sebastian Stan) becomes the wild card in the story. As one would expect a spy action thriller movie, The 355 there are lots of twists and turns, double-crosses, and a major cat-and-mouse game of secret agents maneuvering into each other.
Although it is not a part of the history of the time, The 355Its title comes from the Colonial Period in the United States by its title. While the film does not act as an adaptation per se, it has more of a spiritual connection to its name through the spy activities of the female protagonists. Here’s a rundown of who Agent 355 is, and how he influenced the story The 355.
All Revealed in 355 Film About Agent 355
Despite its title, The 355 does not take a deep dive into the history of Agent 355. The major reference to the film in Agent 355 comes to Mace which takes 355 names, while its group of five female spies conducts the same operation in the modern context. In addition, Agent 355 is referred to in the last scene, when by Chastain (Molly’s game) revenge spy Mace and his teammates took the chip from Nick Fowler. Mace cites the legend of Agent 355 as Nick realizes he’s lost, indicating that he equates the mission he and his allies have accomplished with the Agent 355 mission.
In general, The 355 isn’t that great at tying the history of the Agent 355 legend to the film’s story. However, Kinberg seems to have created a thematic link between the five heroes of the film and the legend of Agent 355 in their screenplay with Teresa Rebeck. Agent 355 is also part of a spy ring known as the Culper Ring, and The 355The cast of spy characters also formed a loose parallel as a similar intelligence organization. This organization proved to be a major asset of the colonial revolutionaries during the American Revolution, and was involved in many well-known intelligence operations. One in particular also involves the person whose name becomes synonymous with the word “traydor.“
Real Agent 355 & Culper Ring Explained
While the identity of Agent 355 is unknown, he is said to have been a spy during the American Revolution, and a player in the Culper Ring. It was a spy ring organized by George Washington and Benjamin Tallmadge, with Robert Townsend and Abraham Woodhall serving as its leaders. Tallmadge, Woodhall, and Townsend also adopted the pseudonyms John Bolton, Samuel Culper Sr., and Samuel Culper Jr. for Culper Ring operations, the three reported in Washington. The main function of the Culper Ring was an intelligence arm that provided information on the activities of the British army. The Culper Ring also served as an instrument to provide information on numerous attacks and behind the scenes activity of British forces during the Revolutionary war.
Among the Culper Ring operations was to give an intel warning to George Washington that Tyron’s Raid was in fact a Trojan horse operation intended to weaken General Henry Clinton’s American forces. Perhaps most famously, the Culper Ring revealed Benedict Arnold’s plan to hand over an American base to the British. The Culper Ring also includes some female spies, such as Sarah Townsend, and the anonymous Agent 355, who is said to be a major player in numerous spy operations in the Culper Ring. Who she is, there isn’t any solid evidence of who the female spy’s identity really is. However, several theories to this point continue to this day.
Theories Of The True Identity Of Agents 355
A proposed candidate for Agent 355 recognition is Anna Strong, known for announcing to the Culper Ring the whereabouts of one of their spies, Caleb Brewster. Other suggested possibilities for the birth of Agent 355 include the aforementioned Sarah Townsend, along with Elizabeth Burgin. Robert Townsend’s own common-law wife is also believed to be a possibility, while another proposal has also been proposed.
Specifically, one assumption is that there are never actually Agent 355 each. However, an anonymous woman may have only provided fragments of intelligence to the Culper Ring without actually being a member. Under this proposition, the 355 number is not a 007-style agent code name of any female member of the Culper Ring. In any case, any Agent 355, or if there is a proper Agent 355, a legend of the services he provided to the Culper Ring emerged from his activities. Given the veiled nature of who Agent 355 is, almost any theory of who she is, or the possibility that she is just an unconnected woman providing useful intelligence, is equally possible.
The world will almost never know the true identity of Agent 355, with centuries of theories and many possibilities on offer. At the same time, Agent 355’s mystery is about what makes his story interesting. The 355 took the story of Agent 355 and ran with it into the 21st century, he said a story of spies saving the world from the shadows. With the film connecting them through their shared spy skills and acts of defending their countries and the world in secret.
