Board certified dermatologist Dr. Sheila Farhang acknowledged in an exclusive interview with E! The news is that hair loss is a very complex issue—one that is often not caused by hair products.
“Hair loss is an emotional condition so people talk about it and want to find answers quickly,” she said. “Unfortunately, because of this, I see a lot of hair product companies being blamed for something that probably doesn’t matter.”
So, what exactly causes hair damage? Well, it could be other aspects of your beauty routine.
“Hair damage and breakage can be caused by harsh chemicals like those done by a professional – think bleach,” said Dr. Farhang, “and also excessive styling and heating.”
The Tucson, Ariz.- and Beverly Hills, Calif.-based dermatologist also noted that health factors such as stress, hormones and nutrient deficiencies can play a role in hair loss.
And if you’re curious about which ingredients in hair care products to avoid, she says, “Sulfates (SLS), high alcohol or bleach products contain ingredients that can be overly drying. your hair and it can cause breakage if you have thin damaged hair.”
