New York indie rockers Widowspeak announced their sixth studio album, The Jacket. The record is from March 11 via Captured Tracks, but the first single “Everything Is Simple” is now available, along with a music video directed by OTIUM. Check it out below.

Widowspeak recorded The Jacket with producer Homer Steinweiss. The record, originally a concept album centered on the formation and disintegration of a fictional band, is full of self-referential, full-circle moments. Now a duo, band members Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas reunite with founding drummer Michael Stasiak for the recording, which also features JD Sumner on bass, and piano and keyboard contributions from Michael Hess.

“Everything Is Simple” previews The Jacket with a minimalist, country groove. “It’s all simple ’til it’s not,” Hamilton shouted, as a black guitar line rolled.

Widowspeak discussed the nature of the song in a statement:

“At the beginning of something (a relationship, a project, a job, a new place) you have this pure feeling to it. Everything feels less complicated because you’re completely focused of that potential. It’s indeterminate, and that makes it easier to understand, because you don’t see the problems yet.Over time, the more you learn, the more you experience, and you’ll see if where are the limits: not even the ones imposed on you, but where you draw your own lines. You may not see what is holding you back until it was before, and then the views of others are contrary to yours. “Everyone builds their own versions of reality.”

The group continued, “The song originally goes to the drama of the fantasy band, but it’s also about our own band. I wonder how I’m an unreliable narrator about my own life, and at the same time maybe there are no ‘real’ stories.

Hamilton heads south from Brooklyn to the rodeo of the song’s music video, where the cowboys corral bulls to the singer “learns to love the ropes when you’re caught” on the opening line. In a statement, the OTIUM director said that “the concept of the video is centered on the idea of testing, knowing that even if things are different from what you want, the action itself is what you are trying to achieve.”

In addition to the release The Jacket, Widowspeak will also be on the road next year. The band’s North American tour began in April in New York City, and ended in May in Cleveland, Ohio. Full support has not yet been announced, but lucky fans in Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta will see them play with Clairo. See the full tour itinerary below, and pick up tickets Ticketmaster.

This past fall, Widowspeak went on a North American tour with Turnover and Temple of Angels. They released their last album, Plum, in 2020.
