Talking to Inside, Hawkeye Costume designer Michael Crow has revealed that the coat Yelena wore in the pivotal macaroni and cheese scene in the series actually hides a couple of Easter eggs that return to the Black Widow’s solo film. The coat, which Crow says is one of the last of its kind in the world, is decorated with some enamel pins. One of the spikes rather than a spider, a deliberate nod the Black Widow’s robe. The other pin, a lifeless hand in a “finger gun” pose has two meanings. Crow explains:

One of these is a type of finger gun, which is the name of a Hawkeye production company. That’s also something Florence really likes because it’s something Yelena did to Black Widow twice. He thought it was a cool reference to Yelena and I think it was a fun nod to our production company.

The scene between Yelena and Kate may be one of the most tense in the series, so it’s no surprise that many viewers don’t get a more subtle look at first glance. However, the fact that they are all included signifies the attention to detail put in by the creative team. Hawkeye and the larger MCU in general. From Pym Tech arrows to Kingpin’s iconic comic book outfit, the show is full of callbacks to past stories, characters, and events. It only makes sense that Crow would approach his costume design with the same mentality. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Yelena’s wardrobe has played a small role in the MCU. In her solo film, it is revealed that the iconic Black Widow vest was gifted to her by Yelena.

With the death of Scarlett Johansson’s character in the current MCU continuation, there is a hole the size of Black Widow that needs to be filled, and as Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will be filled. After stepping on the spotlight and shining both Black Widow and Hawkeye, viewers don’t seem to see the last Yelena. Even his clothes have already helped tell the MCU story.
