Youth Lagoon Announces New Album Heaven Is a Junkyard, Shares Video for New Song: Watch

Seven years later project retirement, Trevor Powers announced his first new album as Lagoon of Youth since 2015 Savage Hills Ballroom. Heaven Is A Junkyard is from June 9 through Fat Possum. See the Tyler T. Williams–directed video for lead single “Aliens in Idaho” below.

follow Savage Hills BallroomPowers has released two albums (described in a recent press release as “experimental tapes”) under his own name: 2018’s Mulberry Violence and 2020s Capricorn. In a statement, Powers reflected on his decision to stop Youth Lagoon in 2016. “I felt like I was in a chokehold,” he said in a statement. “Even though it’s my music, I’ve lost my way. In many ways, I’ve lost myself.”

The project’s revival came after an over-the-counter drug reaction caused eight months of damage to Powers’ larynx and vocal cords, temporarily silencing her voice. “I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to speak again, let alone sing,” he added. “It all feels symbolic in a way…. I’ve swallowed fear all my life and now here it is back.”

Heaven Is A Junkyard about all of us,” Powers said. “These are stories of brothers going off to war, drunken fathers learning to hug, mothers falling in love, neighbors stealing mail, cowboys taking drugs, friends skipping school, me crying in the bathtub, dogs catching rabbits, and children playing in the tall grass.”
