It was just an old watch.
That’s what one man thought when he decided to have his Rolex inspected by the experts at Antiques Roadshow. The man, identified only as “David,” bought the watch in 1974 for $345. He has worn it a few times over the years and doesn’t think it has increased in value much. Boy, was he wrong.
The appraiser surprised David by telling him that the watch was worth at least $200,000. In addition, the watch is also a special edition, similar to the one owned by the legendary actor Paul Newman. That boosted the watch’s value to over $400,000. The appraiser then said the watch was in near-perfect condition, bringing the watch’s value to nearly $700,000.
When I hear stories like that, it reminds me of a fundamental belief that has guided our country for more than two centuries: the value of something is always deeper than what you see at first glance. . That’s true for a watch. A painting. Even the people.
Our Declaration of Independence clearly expresses the deep value of EVERY Man. People do not deserve dignity because they are a certain height, shape, or color. And they should not be denied dignity because they are young or old, unborn, or severely disabled in need of constant care. Our value and worth is embedded in our DNA. Human life is sacred simply because – as the Declaration reads – it is given to us by our Creator.
