Operation for the Soul | Jim Daly

Can you forgive someone who ruined your life?

On a beautiful summer afternoon in 2015, Bryan Kuck and his wife, Lynn, were riding a motorcycle. On their way home, less than a mile from their home, they were run off the road by a drunk driver whose blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit. Lynn was killed instantly. Bryan was critically injured with two broken hips, a broken pelvis, and an amputated left leg after being pinned under the wreckage.

The drunk driver was charged with homicide. At the hearing, Bryan told the court that he and his family were given a life sentence. Bryan will live his whole life without his wife, and his three sons without their mother. Then Bryan turned to the drunk driver and said, “Nevertheless, I forgive you. If it weren't for God, we would all be lost. I am just a beggar helping others to find the Bread of Life.”

Bryan underwent seventeen surgeries to heal his body, but only one thing could heal his soul: forgiveness. Anger and bitterness feel empowering for a while, but it is an emotional cancer that will eventually destroy you from the inside out. Anger can darken your days, your restless nights, and get in the way of your closest relationships.

Forgiveness is like surgery on your soul, filling your heart with hope and peace and releasing you into a new life.
