According to The deadlineLegendary Entertainment is currently in the process of developing a film adaptation of Suburban Hell, based on Maureen Kilmer’s recently published horror novel of the same name. The project originated from Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, both set as producers through their respective production banners Ghost House and Feigco Entertainment.
Suburban Hell will center on a tight-knit group of suburban mothers whose friendship is put to the ultimate test when one of them is possessed by an evil spirit. It will be adapted by writer Joanna Calo, who is coming off of FX’s critical success The Bearwhere he served as showrunner, writer, producer, and director for the series directed by Jeremy Allen White.
In addition to Feig and Raimi, Laura Fischer of Feigco and Rob Tapert of Ghost House are also producing, while Romel Adam and Jose Cañas of Ghost House have been tapped to helm the project.
“Amy Foster considers herself lucky. After she leaves the city and moves to the suburbs, she quickly finds her place with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, who live together from outside the PTA crowd. One night during their monthly wine get-together, the crew hatches a plan for a She Shed clubhouse in Liz’s backyard—a space just for them, no spouses or children allowed,” says the book’s synopsis.
“But the night after they christen the She Shed, things start to feel off… What they don’t expect is that Liz’s little home improvement project will unleash a demonic force that turns their quiet enclave into something from a dream. And that was before the homeowners association got it.
“Even the calmest of mothers can’t rationalize the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible smells that surround their possessed friend, Liz. Together, Amy, Jess, and Melissa must fight the evil spirit to save Liz and the neighborhood…
